intro:

Different stakeholders have different perceptions of a technology. Often, not all relevant stakeholders are involved in the development process from the start which may lead to problems later in the innovation process. The CTA-lite workshop supports the interaction of relevant stakeholders and experts, broadens their mutual understanding of potential societal challenges, and stimulates actions to adapt the innovation and design process in order to increase societal acceptance.

steps:
  • Explore
    1
Define societal challenges and relevant stakeholders.

      1. Which future socio-technical challenges do you expect for the innovation? Think for example about regulatory issues, unexpected user practices, implementational challenges or financial unclarities. These points can help you to formulate the goal of the workshop. Filling in a socio-technical configuration may help answering this question.
      2. What are the most relevant stakeholders for this innovation and which are most affected by the defined socio-technical challenge? A stakeholder analysis can provide you with hints.
  • Invite
    2
    Contact relevant stakeholders.

      1. Find/set a date and start inviting participants. Often it is easier to invite participants from your own network as these interactions already exist. However, be aware of possible biases such a strategy may create.
      2. Keep in mind that the background of the participants also has an influence on the discussion during the workshop: technology developers from universities or companies often focus on the technical aspects and have a different perception on societal aspects compared to potential end-users or non-governmental organizations. Aim for a mix that fits your workshop goal.
      3. Inviting participants with diverse backgrounds and from diverse networks provides most insightful perspectives for the participants. This way the workshop can trigger new collaborations and networks.
  • Prepare
    3
Think about the discussion and tools during the workshop.

      1. To stimulate interaction between the different stakeholders you can use for example a mapping tool (multi-path map) or a scenario which can be constructed or discussed during the workshop.
      2. To create a safe and trusted environment that allow stakeholders to interact openly and constructive with each other you can introduce the Chatham House rules in the beginning of the discussion.
      3. A socio-technical researcher or an experienced moderator can be of great value in helping to identify interesting questions and topics for the CTA-lite workshop and helping to facilitate and moderate the event.

Tip! If you have not the possibility to reach out to real stakeholders you can also organize or create a stakeholder roleplay to experience the impact of stakeholder perspectives on an innovation process!
